Wide-range introduction to the study of written and spoken English. The nature of language; ways of describing language; the use of language study as an approach to English literature and the teaching of English.
As an introductory course, ENGL 370A presents the major approaches and methodologies in language studies with a main focus on English language. We will start from some interesting issues of language, and then move on to more specific and systematic studies on English language. Regarding language structures, we will study lexicon and morphology, phonetics and phonology, syntax and semantics. We then will move to the acquisition of first and second language and finally, sociolinguistics. For the parts of language structures and history, we will use Ed Finegan's Language, sixth edition, and for sociolinguistics, Lippi Green's English with an Accent, second edition.
