Interdisciplinary Writing/Social Science

Expository writing based on material presented in a specified social science lecture course. Assignments include drafts of papers to be submitted in the specified course, and other pieces of analytic prose. Concurrent registration in specified course required.

Class description

The Interdisciplinary Writing Program (IWP) offers writing courses linked with specified lecture courses (see the Time Schedule for current offerings or contact the IWP office at 206-543-2190). These writing courses can be used to satisfy either the University's 5-credit composition requirement or half of the 10-credit "Additional Writing" requirement. Students can take up to three linked writing classes. In a writing link, students are members of a small community focused on materials and ideas introduced by a lecture course. Students gain a fuller understanding of problems, theories, texts, and events discussed in a lecture, and they find that, by writing, they extend and refine their thoughts. Most students say that pairing a writing course with a lecture course enhances their learning in both.
