Class description

The methods and materials used in the reconstruction of the sound system of Old Chinese (the pre-dynastic Chinese language underlying texts and Chinese characters of the first millennium BCE); the features of the major reconstruction systems; the controversial issues and unanswered questions that remain

Readings; reconstruction exercises; student presentations

Recommended preparation

CHIN 342 or 442 ("The Chinese Language") and CHIN 542 ("Introduction to Chinese Historical Phonology"). Students must have a solid understanding of the methods and materials used for reconstructing Middle Chinese phonology, and a basic understanding of phonetic notation and principles of sound change. Students uncertain about their preparation should consult the instructor.
