Special topics in civil engineering offered as course with lecture and/or laboratory. Maximum of 6 credits in combination of CEE 498 and CEE 499 may be applied toward an undergraduate degree.
This course serves as a follow-up to materials covered in HCDE 231 Intro to Tech Writing. It is designed as a writing workshop to help develop good writing habits, practice and skills. Fundamental principals of technical writing will be reviewed and reinforced through practice. We will also spend time on basics of poster design. This class is linked to CEE 440 for students working on their papers as part of the requirements of CEE 440. Everyone will complete a final paper.
Student learning goals
Learn to organize and outline prior to drafting a paper.
Develop editing habits for eliminating writing clutter to accomplish clarity.
Develop writing practice habits.
Learn to present information in a clear, organized and informative form.
Learn to design posters with punch--easy to follow, message clear, and attractive.
Compose your writing with your audience in mind.
General method of instruction
There will be regular writing exercises and editing sessions. In class participation is required and necessary for your success.
Class assignments and grading
There will be weekly short writing assignments, and assignments that are preparation steps for a final paper.
