Concepts in Fiber

Introduces the core philosophical, aesthetic, and technical issues relevant to the field. Hands-on experience with basic aspects of weaving, surface design, and dye principles, in addition to discussions and readings concerning material culture and the multimedia nature of the field.

Class description

Importance of and meaning in materials; ways in which to build a cloth from the basic elemnts up, 2 and 3 dimensional techniques and processes.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lecture and demonstrations, gallery visits, slide presentation, class discussion and critique. All studio based.

Recommended preparation

Art Foundation courses.

Class assignments and grading

Provide historic and cross cultural references and contemporary applications.

Full class participation, completion of all assigned work, creative problem solving, evidence of skills acquisition.
