Arts Learning in the Community

Develops a theoretical and practical understanding of arts-practices in relation to a selected community context. Engages in a specific project at an educational, social service, or arts organization, or in an arts-project that works across communities.

Class description

This course will cover arts learning in the community in the context of arts and the law. Three interconnected community projects will be developed: 1)Augusto Boal's Legislative Theatre, 2) Rashomon Project, a theatrical consideration of legal challenges from multiple perspectives, and 3) the issue of cultural expression and the law.

This work will lead to three mini-exhibits in the community.

Student learning goals

understanding of the different forms of arts learning in the community, especially in relation to art and law,

understanding of legislative theater and its application,

understanding of the Rashomon efffect and how to use it as a device for staging stories,

understanding of issues related to cultural expression and the law,

dvelopment of project idea and implementation,

General method of instruction

Lecture, workshop and field assignments

Recommended preparation

preferred---some training in the arts

Class assignments and grading

reading, groupwork to develop and deliver sub-projects, final paper

Participation, completion of field units, and final paper.
