Special Topics in First-Year Learning

Various topics designed to respond to curricular interests and needs for first-year students. Offered: AWSp.

Class description

This course is linked to the Science and Technology Living-Learning Community but is open to all students. We will partner with community organizations such as a local healthcare clinic, technology outreach programs, and City of Bothell agencies to provide experience in Science and Technology related careers. Students will spend time in class discussion focusing on how Science and Technology fields support needs in the community and interact with society as a whole.

Student learning goals

Students will have increased awareness of the role of scientists and scientific information in society.

Students will interact with and provide support to community partners in healthcare, technology, and other science and technology areas.

Students will be able to describe the role scientific studies, discoveries, and science outreach play in the work of their chosen community partner organization.

General method of instruction

Community-based learning, discussion.

Class assignments and grading

The class is C/NC and determination of credit will be based on participation in activities and discussions.
