Technology Recharge Fee and Self-Sustaining Services

Technology Recharge Fee

Services

The Technology Recharge Fee (TRF) was established in 2010 to provide a sustainable long-term funding model for critical information technology services at the UW. The fee is a per capita rate paid by all UW academic and administrative units to supplement existing central funds, which pay for the basic services.

Technology Recharge Fee Rates for FY 2014

The FY 2014 Technology Recharge Fee is effective July 1, 2013. The TRF rates for FY 2014 are:

  • $54.50 per month per capita for all academic and administrative units.
(This represents a 3.5 percent increase over the current rate of $52.68.)
  • $50.00 per month per capita for the Medical Centers.
(This represents a 7.1 percent decrease over the current rate of $53.43.)

The dial tone rate for FY 2014:

  • The dial tone rate is $4.05 per month per line, the same as last year. This continues the 33 percent decrease from the FY 2011 rate of $6.18 per month (further reduced from the FY 2010 rate of $25.80 per month).

Technology Fee Review and Rate Setting Process

The IT Service Investment Board (Board) was charged by the Provost with reviewing the fee level and methodology for FY 2014. The Provost approved the Board's recommendation to adjust the TRF rates slightly for FY 2014 to respond to a changing business model, including how costs are allocated to UW Medical Centers. The adjustment does not include any budget increases for UW-IT, but only a recalibration of how costs are aggregated and allocated to UW units. The new rates are effective July 1, 2013.

The Board recommended that UW-IT maintain the adjusted methodology for the TRF for Fiscal Years 2014 and 2015 and continue with the same basic bundle of services, including the Microsoft and Apple licensing agreements. The Board’s recommendation reflects the advice of the Technology Recharge Fee Advisory Committee, comprised of financial directors representing academic and administrative units and UW Medical Centers, and charged with supporting the Board in its annual TRF review by providing in-depth analysis and counsel.
