Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award

 

Thanks to a generous gift from the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, this award will be given annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in community-based instruction, including service learning, public service internships and community partnership projects.

 

The award is named for S. Sterling Munro, former top aide to the late Senator Henry M. Jackson and administrator of the Bonneville Power Administration. During his 25 years of public service to Washington State and the nation, Munro was extensively involved in natural resources and environmental legislation. Munro also served on the boards of the Jackson Foundation and Central Washington University.

 

Who is Eligible:
Faculty (tenure-track and all full time faculty members) within the University of Washington are eligible to receive a Munro Award.

 

Award Background:
The faculty member recognized will receive a $5000 award. In addition, Undergraduate Academic Affairs will fund a graduate student to work with the Munro Award recipient during his or her award year. The recipient of this award will be honored with recipients of the Teaching Awards at a ceremony held in the spring.

 

Nomination Procedure:
The deadline for nominations for the S. Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award is Friday, December 7, 2007, 5pm . All members of the University community (faculty, staff, students, alumni) may submit a one-page letter nominating a faculty member. Self-nominations are not accepted. Previous recipients are ineligible. Letters of nomination must include your name and current mailing address. Selection Procedure:
Following review of the one-page letters of nomination, the Selection Committee will ask for further information on a selected number of nominations which include curricular vitae, letters of support from colleagues, current and past students, community organization and course/curriculum materials. The committee will make recommendations to the President, who will make the final selection. The recipients will be announced in the spring and will be honored at the Annual Recognition Reception in Meany Hall, UW Seattle campus in June.
