Mission Statement:

The mission of the University of Washington Teaching Academy is to provide leadership that will encourage and foster life-long critical thinking and learning for both undergraduate and graduate students.

The University of Washington Teaching Academy is committed to support the development of attitudes, thought, and practice needed to create and sustain a successful learning environment in a premier research university. This desired learning environment, based on a deep seeded respect for the students, faculty, and all of the individuals that work to support the university’s teaching mission, is embedded in a culture focused on inquiry, diversity, innovation and excellence.

In order to have every student successfully reach their fullest potential, the practice of teaching must respect and acknowledge the diversity of learning experiences students bring to the university. Through workshops, seminars, lectures and other projects, the University of Washington Teaching Academy encourages adoption of best teaching practices to enhance student learning. The Academy sponsors programs and activities that foster intellectual discovery and transformative experiences, a welcoming and inclusive campus climate, clear articulation of learning goals, manifestation of learning outcomes through exposition and evaluation, and an emphasis on active learning.

The University of Washington Teaching Academy is also committed to bring the recognition and reward afforded to other forms of scholarly work to the practice of scholarly teaching.  Through a variety of annual awards, the UW Teaching Academy formally recognizes faculty and graduate students whose creativity and dedication in the classroom continues to advance the University’s teaching and learning mission.

The Academy is under the auspices of Undergraduate Academic Affairs and is comprised of a dedicated and dynamic network of scholar-teachers.  As part of the UW Teaching and Learning Consortium (TLC), the Academy works with the Center for Instructional Development and Research (CIDR), Learning and Scholarly Technologies, Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMAD), Office of Educational Assessment  (OEA), Graduate School, Center for Engineering Learning and Technology(CELT), the Undergraduate Research Program (URP), and the Faculty Council on Instructional Quality (FCIQ) to enrich the educational experience of the entire University of Washington community.
