Policies & Professionalism: Scenario 1

Two days before the midterm, a student e-mails: she must leave town at once to be with her father, who had a heart attack and needs open-heart surgery. She can take a make-up exam when she returns but is concerned that missing a week of class will affect her participation grade. Could you e-mail her with a preview of her grade for the course so far? What can she do to keep her absence from affecting her final grade?

Policies:

“A students absent from any examination or class activity through sickness or other cause judged by the instructor to be unavoidable shall be given an opportunity to take a rescheduled examination or perform work judged by the instructor to be the equivalent.” UW Handbook Vol. 4, Part III, Chapter 12, Sec. 1B. visit

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulates disclosure of student information, including grades. Posting grades publicly or notifying students of grades via email without the student’s written permission violates FERPA. visit
