Social Welfare Practice II

Examines the roles, tasks and functions of the social welfare practitioner and the theories and methods of intervention; a conceptual framework for social work practice with individuals, families and small groups; and a an opportunity to develop skills in problem assessment, intervention, termination, and evaluation. Class description

Welcome to Social Welfare Practice II! This is an exciting and dynamic class that studies both theory and application of the helping relationship. We wil examine interviewing skills through role plays, video tape and instructor demonstration. Theories will be studied to better understand the foundation of Social Welfare Practice.

Student learning goals

Define the generalist perspective in social work practice.

Understand and apply the value base and ethics of social work practice.

Understand the “ecological,” “strengths,” and “empowerment” perspectives in social work practice and research.

Understand the varied knowledge base (theory, research, practice wisdom) that informs generalist practice.

Demonstrate key skills in effective communication.

Demonstrate understanding of cultural and human diversity issues and their implications for generalist practice.

Direct instruction through lecture and powerpoint presentations Large and small group activities

Recommended preparation

Class assignments and grading

There are two major assignments in this course. One is an interview with a person of a different culture than your own. The second is an analysis of a fictional family.

Grades are based on meeting assignment criteria; writing skills; organization and use of the APA format
