Uses Rome as a laboratory to understand the role of art, history, and urbanism in the development of Western culture. Addresses the many facets of the cultural development of Rome and Italy, including geography, history, urban design, art, and architecture. Research-based and includes extensive fieldwork.
Class description
Students will gain an introduction to the topography, history, and culture of Rome.

General method of instruction
Instruction is based on fieldwork conducted in Rome from 6/17/02-7/5/02.
Recommended preparation
A year of World Civilization or Western Civilization is recommended but not required. Speaking knowledge of Italian helpful but not required.
Class assignments and grading
Daily fieldwork in Rome followed by the completion of a major research paper upon return to the US. Each student will give one or two presentations on site in Rome.
Grades will be assigned on the basis of having completed all fieldwork and the quality of oral and written assignments.
