Examines the craft of the emerging genre of creative non-fiction. Combines intensive study of published work with a workshop in which students critique each other's work. It is recommended that students complete at least one other writing or literature course before enrolling.
Class description
This workshop-style class will introduce students to the process and techniques of creative nonfiction writing from initial drafts through advanced revisions. Class readings, which include notable essays from the tradition as well as contemporary works, will make students familiar with various writing styles and provide examples of the successes and strategies of other writers. Student will share work with other class members inside and outside of class. Class time will be spent drafting various writing exercises, discussing the assigned readings, exploring various aspects of craft, and reviewing student writing.
