Tacoma Campus
Introduces students to university work by focusing on a core curriculum theme from multiple and interdisciplinary perspectives. Emphasizes learning in the humanities, including literature, philosophy, film, theatre, music, and art.
Class description
With only ten weeks to devote to the history of music, we will narrow our focus to one work: La Boheme, Puccini's beloved opera, which we will have the opportunity to attend live. La Boheme is a love story focused around the 'bohemian' community: those who we might now refer to as 'struggling artists' who are often associated with unorthodox or non-traditional political and social ideals. In addition to exposing us to one of music's grandest genres, La Boheme allows us to analyze the ties between classical and popular music, and the ways in which composers use their art for political and social commentary. From this starting point, we will explore the role of art music in today's global society, building our understanding with an in-depth look at several unique individuals in music's past and present.
