Class description
Gender and the New International Division of Labor in Pacific Asia
This is the second of a two course series examining the economic, social, and ideological framework of gendered social relations in East Asia in the last two centuries. The primary focus in this course is the era from 1945 to the present. The last half of the 20th century saw East Asia reregionalized into Pacific Asia and a shift from modernization (national development, autarky) to globalization (intraregional development) strategies. Modes of production, consumption, service provision, migratory labor, intra-regional investment, and national/international production are all reshaping norms of gender in Asia.
