Introduce you to the empirical traditions and intellectual commitments that inform both research and practice in the field of technical communication by 1. contrasting empiricism with the rational traditions that inform our field, 2. surveying and comparing the relative strengths and weaknesses of several different empirical-both quantitative and qualitative-methods and 3. briefly surveying the body of literature that has resulted from empirical research in the fields of text and visual communication.
