Advanced Technical Writing and Oral Presentation

Emphasis on the presentation of technical information to various audiences. Style of writing required for proposals, reports, and journal articles. Oral presentation principles, including use of visuals, as well as organizing and presenting an effective talk. For engineering majors. Prerequisite: T C 231. Offered: AWSpS.

Class description

Objectives: • Write letters and memos about their work. • Create an effective resume and cover letter. • Complete a formal technical report with a standard format, including a cover letter and executive summary. • Propose a project or a solution to a problem in a proposal. • Give an adequate oral presentation about a technical topic. • Edit writing for common grammatical and stylistic flaws.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Four contact hours per week. Class is generally a mix of lecture, discussion, and small group activities. Several days in the quarter are set aside for student presentations.

Recommended preparation

Completion of TC 231. Senior status is recommended, as this is a course that prepares engineering students for work.

Class assignments and grading

Several written documents as well as 3 oral presentations. Students are often writing a document while preparing a presentation on a different topic.

All assignments earn points, 410 available in the course. Class participation is a major portion of the grade. There are no exams.
