Icelandic sagas and poetry about Vikings in the context of thirteenth-century society.
Class description
Students will gain experience in reading in translation stories written by authors of another era and culture. They will also gain experience in textual analysis.

No special preparation needed, except maybe a fondness for good story telling and a good attendance record.
Class assignments and grading
The focus of student work is on writing.
Weekly response paper 2-3 pages in length, a portfolio of the papers written during the quarter, and a final essay 7-8 pages.
