Seminar in Contemporary Russian Prose

Analysis of Russian prose fiction. Selected authors and topics.

Class description

This is a graduate seminar, with all readings in Russian and discussion in both, Russian and English. The topic is NABOKOV'S RUSSIAN NOVELS, 1925-1937.

Student learning goals

Understanding Nabokov

Understanding Russian emigre literature in the 1920s and 1930s

Understanding European Modernism

Developing more fluency in reading fairly complicated texts in Russian

Further developing research skills

Further developing writing skills

General method of instruction

Seminar. Brief lectures but mostly discussions.

Recommended preparation

The seminar is for Slavic L&L graduate students but advanced majors or students from other departments with 4 years of Russian or native or near native fluency in Russian can enroll with the permission of the instructor.

Otchaianie, "Oblako, ozero, bashnia"

WEEK 7 & 8

Priglashenie na kazn', "Izobretenie val'sa"

WEEK 9 & 10

Glavy iz Dara i Drugikh beregov

Final: 15-20 pp. Research Paper in English

In class discussions; possible reports; final paper at the end (see above).
