Russian Literature of the Twentieth Century

Survey of twentieth-century Russian poetry and prose. Pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and emigre authors, trends, and genres. Includes survey of twentieth-century literary criticism as well, in particular Russian formalists and Mikhail Bakhtin.

Class description

The course will deal with major Russian and American novels of Vladimir Nabokov: The Defense (or Luzhin's Defense), Despair, Pnin, and Lolita.

There will be a special one-hour session each week for Honors and Grads. Slavic grads should read the two Russian novels on the list in Russian.
