Eastern Europe: the Political Economy of the Region

Focus on the classical command-type economy and the most recent economic and political transition in Eastern Europe. Analysis of current institutional reform, privatization, and trade relations.

Class description

To apply various political economy paradigms to capture the evolution of communist systems: their emergence, functioning, collapse and the follow-up transition to capitalism.

Lectures, linked to relevant readings.

Recommended preparation

Attend classes and keep up with the reading assignments.

Class assignments and grading

3 noncumulative tests, plus 1 research paper on an assigned topic.

Each test, 20 points; the paper, 20 points.
