Study and analysis of special topics in public affairs. Topics vary each quarter depending on curricular needs and interests of students and faculty. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
Class description
The goal of the course is to think through what we mean by social justice and how values around social justice motivate concerns about problems and solutions in the public arena. Through discussions of cases from a wide variety of policy arenas (for example: Environmental Justice, Environmental Protection or Resource Development, Women in International Development, Equitable Development in U.S. Metropolitan Regions, Racial Residential Segregation, Food Security, Disability issues, Labor Force Transformation and Retraining, Welfare Policy) we will unearth the values underlying our understanding of the problem, the conflicts about these problem, and perspectives on solutions, paying special attention to equity. This class meets the Evans School restricted elective requirement.

The class will be taught as a seminar, with discussion being the main method of instruction.

Class assignments and grading
2 papers, one at about the course midpoint and a final paper.
