Description: Critical reading and writing skills; knowledge of Chinese politics, particularly the period after 1989; state of recent scholarship on Chinese domestic politics.

Class assignments and grading
Assignments: Reading one book or so a week. Weekly short (3-5 page) critical analyses of assigned readings. Research paper.
Grades: Participation: 15%; short papers: 35%; research paper: 50%.
