International Relations in the Middle East

Study of domestic sources of foreign policy in the Middle East; politics of oil; the East-West rivalry in the arena; and conflict and collaboration among the local powers.

Class description

Description. This course will provide students with a sharp focus arguments about why the US should or should not invade Iraq. We will discuss weapons of mass destruction, the role of sanctions, and human rights issues.

Texts. Assigned books are Iraq: Sanctions and Beyond (Anthony Cordesmann), The Gathering Storm (Kenneth Pollack), War on Iraq: What Team Bush Doesn't Want You to Know (William Rivers and Scott Ritter), Republic of Fear (Kanan Makiya).

Class assignments and grading

Assignments. There will be two quizzes and a final.

Grading: Exams: 50 %; Class/quiz participation: 50 %.
