Modern Quantum Field Theory

Advanced topics in quantum field theory. Prerequisite: PHYS 570, PHYS 571. Credit/no-credit only.

Class description

Gauge Fixing and Path Integrals for U(1) gauge theories, Ward Identities, renormalization conditions in gauge theories, Infrared divergences in theories with massless particles, nonrenomalizable theories,Non-Abelian Gauge Theories, Strongly coupled and Asymptotically free Quantum Field Theories, Higgs mechanism, Effective Action, Effective Potential,Anomalies, Solitons, monopoles, instantons

Student learning goals

Do renormalized perturbation theory in gauge theories

Use and renormalize effective theories

Compute anomalous dimensions for composite operators

Coping with IR and UV divergences

General method of instruction
