PHIL 437
Seattle Campus
Study Hume's analyses of knowledge, the passions, and morals.
Class description
As careful an examination of the Treatise as a quarter permits. The overall goal is to determine whether Hume is just the brash but lovable village skeptic who brings down the house of empiricism or in his “attempt to introduce the experimental method of reasoning into moral subjects” he is trying to naturalize epistemology and ethics. If, as I am inclined to believe, he was pursuing the latter project, the obvious question is how successful he was.
