Philosophy of Aristotle

Study of several major Aristotelian treatises.

Class description

We will focus primarily on the Ethics, and use the Politics to fill out the ethical theory and to provide its political context. Students should be warned that Aristotle does not have the literary gifts of Plato: be prepared for some hard slogging. There will written exercises of varying degrees of difficulty on a regular basis. Prerequisite: at least one upper division course in ancient philosophy. Texts: Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics, translated by David Ross (Oxford University Press); Aristotle, Politics, translated by C.D.C. Reeve (Hackett).
