Twentieth-Century Philosophy

A study of development of contemporary analytic philosophy, the revolt against idealism, and the linguistic turn in philosophy.

Class description

A survey of the rise and fall of logical positivism in the 20th century as a philosophical movement originating in response to the perceived incoherence of German Idealism in Germany, England and The United States. Topics will include metaphysics, philosohy of language, philosophy of mind, and epistemology. Weekly homework, two take home exams, and a final or a paper in lieu thereof.
