Study of some of the major American philosophers such as Peirce, Royce, Dewey, William James, C. I. Lewis, Goodman, Quine.
Class description
A study of philosophy in America focusing on the elaboration and development of pragmatism. In particular, we will consider and evaluate the views of the pragmatists with regards to issues of truth, ethics, politics and religion. Authors to be read will include: Emerson, James, Peirce, Dewey, Cornel West and Stanley Cavell. The last section of the course will consist in a focused study of (some of) the writings of the recently deceased American philosopher Richard Rorty.
