Introduction to Social and Political Philosophy

An introduction to political theories such as conservatism, liberalism, and socialism and their treatment of select social issues.

Class description

This course examines contemporary issues in social and political philosophy. The questions we will consider include the following: Is it legitimate for a government to enforce morality on its citizens? Is there reason to believe that there are universal human rights? What do we owe the starving children around the world? What should govern the behavior between nation-states - self-interest or moral principles? Course requirements include two exams, a group presentation, and a term-paper.
