Philosophical consideration of some of the main moral problems of modern society and civilization, such as abortion, euthanasia, war, and capital punishment. Topics vary.
Class description
In this course we will closely analyze a number of controversial moral issues such as the debate surrounding animal rights, abortion, euthanasia and the death penalty. Most importantly, we will be approaching these issues from a philosophical perspective, meaning that we will be focusing on the arguments for and against the various positions on those topics. Consequently, there are three general objectives for this course: 1) to develop the ability to closely read difficult articles in philosophy and to extract their central arguments; 2) to acquire the concepts necessary for understanding these arguments; 3) to develop skills in argumentation that are needed to assess, criticize, and also to construct arguments.
