Bioinformatics and Gene Sequence Analysis

Nature and relevance of molecular sequence information, computer-based protein, and DNA sequence analysis, molecular sequence and genomic databases, and methods for database accession and interrogation. Prerequisite: background in molecular biology and permission of instructor. Offered: jointly with MEBI 536/PHG 536; ASp.

Class description

Basic training in computer-based molecular sequence analysis utilizing the most recent web-based databases.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Short lectures and demonstrations followed by hands-on analysis in the microcomputer center under the instructor's guidance.

Recommended preparation

Must have a good background in molecular biology with a knowledge of basic computer/internet skills.

Class assignments and grading

Weekly homework assignments using analytical skills introduced in each topic.

Usually, two-thirds of grade dependent on homework and one-third on take-home final.
