We instructors, John Baross and Jody Deming, intend for the class to address many types of viruses (of Bacteria, Archaea, marine Eukarya), factors that enable and constrain their lytic versus lysogenic activity and ability to engage in horizontal gene, and implications for the origin and evolution of life. Student interests will play a strong role in the selection of specific topics addressed. Assignments will include student presentations and written evidence of scholarly reading.
