Class description
In this course you will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience with the concepts presented in Ocean 200. Each week’s activities are designed to highlight a fundamental question in ocean research.
Field trip: Each student will participate in a half day research cruise on the R.V. Clifford Barnes during the week of May 3.
Student learning goals
Through these activities you will learn how we develop a scientific appreciation for the world we inhabit.
At the end of this class, we hope you will be able to read lay reports of scientific studies and think critically about how the study was designed and what the results really mean.
This class will teach you to understand how we do science and will therefore give you a better appreciation of the role that science plays in your everyday life.
General method of instruction
Students will work in small groups to carry out in class lab experiments.
Recommended preparation
There are no prerequisites but this class is designed to be taken by students also enrolled in Ocean 200.
Class assignments and grading
We will do a lab in class each week and students will hand in a report one week after the lab is completed in class.
