Practicum: Nursing of Families: Childbearing and Childrearing

Provides the opportunity for supervised nursing of childbearing and childrearing families and individuals. Emphasizes expanding nursing process skills, especially health promotion, with individuals and families during childbearing and childrearing. Credit/no credit only. Prerequisite: NURS 415, which may be taken concurrently. Offered: AW.

Class description

As senior nursing students, you will have the opportunity to practice and critique nursing care of childbearing families in the clinical setting. You will experience the responsibility of nursing in the following areas: Labor and Delivery, Special Care Nursery, Mother/Baby (Family) Unit, Antepartum Clinic. Additionally, some students will have the opportunity to spend time with a lactation specialist.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Clinical experiences will build on theory taught at the beginning of the course. Critical and clinical thinking will be emphasized through dialogue between student and instructor during the clinical day. Preceptors from the clinical site will help students throughout the day. Clinical post-conference will focus on special topics and integration of clinical issues.

Recommended preparation

Review special nursing considerations for each area through assignments provided.

Class assignments and grading

Thorough and honest analysis of your performance is expected each week. Preparation for each area will be assessed through written and verbal interactions.

This course is credit/no credit. In order to receive credit for this course, you must demonstrate accountability in preparation, practice, assignments, and participation.
