Analytical examination of the work of a major composer of the twentieth century. Prerequisite: MUSIC 574 or permission of instructor.
Class description
This offering of Music 577 is devoted to the music of French composer Joël-François Durand.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
The course is conducted as a seminar, with all students expected to participate in analytical work and discussion on a regular basis.
Recommended preparation
Students should have taken MUS 574, and have an extensive exposure to 20th century music, or equivalent experience or preparation.
Class assignments and grading
Regular reading assignments from Durand's own writings and the secondary literature, interspersed with analysis. One assigned presentation at some point during the quarter, which will be developed into the student's final paper for the course.
Contribution to discussion, quality of presentation, and quality of final paper are all counted toward the grade in this course.
