Time Schedule:

Toby Saks
MUSIC 117
Seattle Campus

Elementary Music Theory

For nonmusic majors. For students who can read music, having some performance experience. Prerequisite: MUSIC 116.

Class description

Please note that Music 117 is considerably more advanced than Music 116. It is meant for non-music major students who are comfortable when they read music. The course requires reading and writing actual music fluently in treble and bass clefs. Before taking Music 117, it is essential to ALREADY know the materials that were covered in Music 116 (notation of rhythmic symbols, meters, simple and compound rhythmic systems, notation of pitches in treble and bass clefs, intervals, scales, key signatures.) Music 117 will teach basics of harmony (analysis of chords and figured bass notation, analysis of non-harmonic tones, chord progressions, cadences and phrase structure.) Rhythmic notation will be an important part of the course.
