Seminar in Music Since 1890

Prerequisite: MUHST 500.

Class description

The course offers an in-depth study in a composer, a genre, and/or a critical issue in 20th-century music in Europe and the United States. Topics vary each year. The topic for Autumn 2009 is the work of Charles Ives.

General method of instruction

Seminar-style discussions; student presentations of assigned material.

Recommended preparation

Thorough background in undergraduate history and analysis of 20th-century music; eagerness to participate in class discussions.

Class assignments and grading

Brief in-class presentations are required of all students, along with a substantial written paper.

Class participation; quality of written paper.
