Full-Time Student Teaching in Music

Supervised teaching internship. Directed observations of distinguished teachers in an elementary or secondary music setting. Weekly seminars. Credit/no-credit only. Prerequisite: MUSED 403. Offered: AWSp.

Class description

This course will stimulate thinking regarding issues of music teaching and learning, particularly in relationship to your development as teachers. Students will develop and apply the practical skills that are necessary for effective music teaching in a classroom setting. Students will also be prepared for the job hunt process, learning how to search for positions and having appropriate materials ready for applications. Additionally, seminar participants will their improve classroom/rehearsal teaching via video observation, reflection, goal setting, and peer and self-evaluation.

Student learning goals

To stimulate thinking regarding issues of music teaching and learning, particularly in relationship to your development as teachers.

To develop practical skills such as planning, classroom instruction and budget writing that are necessary for effective music teaching in a classroom setting.

To be prepared for the job hunt process, knowing how to search for positions and having appropriate materials ready for applications.

To improve classroom/rehearsal teaching via video observation, reflection, goal setting and evaluation.

General method of instruction

Seminar format, discussion.

Recommended preparation

Successful completion of MUSED 403.

Class assignments and grading

This class is credit/no credit, per the UW music education student teaching handbook. There is no formal final exam. Please note the stipulations for passing the class can be found on page 12 of the handbook. All seminar assignments must be completed on time and in a satisfactory manner before credit for the course is awarded. Reasons for no credit include: missing class, missing assignments, handing in assignments late, handing in assignments of poor quality, performing poorly during observations, performing poorly in your placement. In order to pass, you are required to satisfactorily complete 100% of your assignments. Since the nature of this class is participatory, attendance is paramount to your grade. This class takes precedence over essentially all other commitments, including student teaching. You are required to attend every class meeting; however, if an emergency arises, please contact me prior to class. If you miss a class meeting (with prior notice), you will be required to make it up. Please see me if you have any conflicts, concerns, or questions about your grade or this class.
