Class description
This is a practical course, designed for non-lawyers who are starting up new companies and have concerns about how to recognize, protect, develop, market and manage their intellectual property in a global economy. The class will also address issues of how current company executives with more mature companies can better protect their critical intellectual property. Related e-commerce issues will be discussed. An international perspective will be stressed.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
A combination of lectures and class discussions. Group projects involving analysis of significant cases. Current events of legal significance will also be addressed.
Recommended preparation
Review newspapers and periodicals to identify and begin to understand legal issues involving intellectual property such as music, computer programs, biotech and medical devices, etc.
Class assignments and grading
Rather than exams the assignments will consist of homework problems on intellectual property issues, and group projects involving case analyses. The case analyses will be presented to the class, for in-class feedback and evaluation, and assigned a group grade.
There will be four (4) homework problems, which will each count 20%. The remainder of the grade will consist of a class participation grade (20%), which will be based on a combination of attendance, quality of contributions to class discussions, and the group project. Each class participant will be assigned to one group project.
