Performance Appraisal and Compensation

The various kinds of systems used by organizations to evaluate and reward employee performance. Job analysis, job evaluation, setting performance standards, giving appraisal feedback, designing incentive systems, administering a salary plan. Prerequisite: MGMT 311. Offered: Sp.

Class description

At the conclusion of the course students will be able to: 1. Design a legally defensible compensation system 2. Evaluate an organization's pay structure for bias 3. If given wage survey data, analyze it, and set appropriate wage rates. 4. Design a legally defensible performance appraisal instrument. 5. If given a specific job to evaluate, develop appropriate performance standards and metrics. 6. Evaluate the appropriateness of forced distribution appraisal system.s 7. Give constructive performance feedback 8. Successfully negotiate starting salaries for yourself and others 9. Evaluate the value of stock options, profit sharing plans and gain sharing plans. 10. Develop a balanced scorecard with appropriate metrics

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

This is an experiential class in that students will learn by doing. You will complete a compensation simulation in which you develop a compensation system for either a hospital or an accounting firm. Lectures will guide the way coupled with skill building exercises. There will also be skill builders and guest lectures

Recommended preparation

This course requires that you have taken the introductory course in human resources management or BA472. It is a required course for completion of the HRM concentration. Must be comfortable with statistics and EXCEL. While I will provide guidance on the project and a refresher course, you do need to do some simple statistics in the class.

Class assignments and grading

Skill builders to increase knowledge of Compensation Laws and job evaluation. Case analyzes to increase understanding of performance management. There is a complex compensation simulation in which students working in teams develop a compensation system for an accounting firm or a hospital. Individual projects include: Statistical project Skill builders on legal system, living wage, job evaluation, performance appraisal, and case analyses.
