We are a nation of laws. Some laws create business opportunity. Some laws regulate and restrict business. Laws also affect our personal lives from birth to death, and everything in between. Strategic planning requires taking such legal issues into account when making major business or personal decisions. This course will provide a basic overview of our legal system. An emphasis will be on recognizing and analyzing real-world issues so that legal issues can be incorporated into strategic planning.
Student learning goals
To understand how law affects our business and personal lives.
To appreciate how laws are created, including the political and other pressures that come to bear when major public policy changes are made.
To understand basic substantive legal issues, such as the requirements for a contract, and the remedies available when a contract is breached.
To recognize and analyse real world legal issues, and to incorporate legal issues into strategic planning when making major business and personal decisions.
General method of instruction
I will do several things to prepare you for the exams. First, I will cover the material in an organized way so that the information necessary to answer the test questions has been covered. Second, I will give you instructions on how to prepare for and answer test exams. Third, I will make myself available to answer your questions about the class material so you can better prepare for the exams.
I expect you to read the book and to complete the reading assignments by the date listed on this syllabus. Reading the book will give you the basic information you will need to prepare for the class lectures.
I expect you to attend class regularly. Almost all of what is on the midterm and final exam is covered during class lectures. If you miss class then obtain the notes from that lecture and review them. If you donít attend class regularly then it will be very difficult to get a good grade.
I expect you to ask questions. If you do not understand a basic concept I want to know. If you are confused I want to know. If you need help I want to know.
I expect you to participate in class discussions. Part of becoming a leader involves analyzing information, speaking in front of your peers, and motivating others to work with you to solve real-world issues.
I expect you to study. I expect you to work hard. I want you to see yourself as a leader, somebody who is preparing to live a productive and successful life in a challenging world. I know it is hard. But the rewards are great.
Class assignments and grading
There are assigned readings in the class textbook. Students are expected to participate and interact during the lectures.
Grading is on a curve, which means that your performance is compared to other students in the class. If you perform better than 50% of the other students then you will receive a higher than average grade. If you perform worse than 50% of the other students then you will receive a lower than average grade. The average grade in this class is approximately 2.7.
Grading is based on a midterm exam and a final exam. The midterm is worth 1/2 of the grade and the final is worth 1/2. The final exam is comprehensive but will emphasize what came after the midterm.
