Class description

Course Title: Information Access in the Social Sciences

LIS529 will focus on bibliography of general social science resources and eight social science disciplines: Education, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, and Anthropology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Describe and analyze social sciences reference sources in all formats in order to evaluate their function and quality. 2. Utilize reference sources in the social sciences in order to answer real and hypothetical reference questions. 3. Read about and discuss the reference interview, (reference ethics, evaluations of reference service quality, and models of reference service) in order to formulate a process approach to answering reference questions. 4. Investigate the information gathering behavior and needs of both scholars and general readers in the social sciences in order to discuss special problems in social sciences reference service.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lecture, discussion, discovery learning through weekly hands-on assignments which require use of reference materials in all formats (print, electronic, etc).

Recommended preparation

Basic reference course or prior experience providing reference service in a library.

Class assignments and grading

Hands on assessment and use of reference works to answer reference questions. Assigned readings and in-class discussion.

Weekly reference problem sets which require examination and evaluation of reference sources, a final project to create a research guide in a social science field, class participation (both in class and in online discussion forum).
