Collection Development

Access to materials as context for development and management of library collections in academic, public, school libraries. Community analysis, library mission; collection development policies, criteria, levels, responsibilities; aids to selection; collection evaluation, use studies; controversial materials.

Class description

LET'S BUILD A REAL, USEABLE, AND USEFUL COLLECTION! A local high school, which has no library, has requested we build them a virtual collection connecting print, multimedia, and electronic resources. In teams, you will conduct a needs assessment and community analysis, write a collection development policy, develop a list of selection and evaluation resources, and compile an opening day collection. We will be working with a school administrator, principal, technology specialist, and several students working on their portfolio projects. This class will provide a real-life experience in collaborative and cooperative collection development. Individual interests will be considered for all assignments.
