Principles of Information Services

Analysis of the information mediation process, including determination and analysis of information needs; searching for, evaluation, and presentation of appropriate results; modalities for delivery of services; and current and future techniques. Prerequisite: LIS 520.

Class description

This course focuses on building expertise in intermediation through searching and finding information resources, exploring information service issues and the informational interview, expanding general and subject-area knowledge, and learning through both observation and hands-on experience about the work of information professionals.

Class assignments and grading

Students will answer hands-on digital reference questions via the Internet Public Library and will observe at an information service to learn about the actual work of information professionals. A "take home" final exam involves answering a set of reference questions.

The required textbook is: Katz, William A. (2002), Introduction to Reference Work. Volume 1: Basic Information Services, 8th Edition. New York: McGraw-Hill.
