Class description

Theory and techniques for interviewing and counseling clients using a client-centered approach

Student learning goals

How to conduct client interviews

How to effectively listen and assist clients (and witnesses) in telling their stories

How to gather and assess client information

How to use questioning techniques to develop the legal theories of the case

How to counsel and guide clients in their decision-making

General method of instruction

Lecture and class discussion Demonstrations Role play exercises

Class assignments and grading

Assigned readings from Binder text Critiques of interview styles used by journalists/interviewers Role play exercises
