Class description

This course is an introduction to the ancient Latin language. The course proceeds from an examination of Latin grammar through extensive reading and composition exercises with a view to fluid reading and writing skills. The course will also be allow exploration more fundamental concepts in the study of language, using Latin as a case study. Along with Latin 102 and Latin 103 this course provide a foundation for studying Latin literature, and is a cornerstone of the Classics major.

Student learning goals

• Read a paragraph of real, or close to real ancient Latin with the help of a dictionary

• Describe Latin grammar using the technical vocabulary that is employed in classical commentaries, and that underlies the vocabulary of Basic Linguistic Theory (BLT)

• Use basic Latin vocabulary to communicate
