Class description
The purpose of this seminar is to guide Master's students of the Russian East European, and Central Asian Studies program toward the timely and successful completion of their MA theses. Course meetings will be focused primarily on student presentations and peer feedback, but the instructor will also intervene when this seems useful and appropriate. Each student will be responsible for completing three assignments: an Each student will be responsible for completing three assignments: an initial "thesis statement" (usually your intro chapter/section) and basic bibliography of sources to be consulted, including sources in the language(s) of the REECA region; an outline of the entire MA thesis along with a chapter; and, finally, a completed draft of the thesis itself. JSIS A 514 and significant research completed on thesis.
Class assignments and grading
As you will recall, JSIS A 514-515 are a hyphenated and graded courses. The grade ultimately given for JSIS A514 will apply also to JSIS A 515. Twenty-five percent of the grade has come from your performance in JSIS A 514 with the remaining seventy-five percent from JSIS A 515 assignments. Each student will be responsible for completing five assignments: a presentation of a revised thesis statement (10%); submission of detailed outline and bibliography (5%); submission of 2 initial chapters of thesis (10%); small group peer review (edits and comments on others' chapters in two small group sessions) (15%); and presentation of complete draft of the thesis (25%). Attendance and participation (i.e. feedback on others' presentations in weeks 1, 9 and 10) will make up the remaining 10% of the grade.
