Advanced Readings in Classical Japanese Literature

Continued readings in classical literary texts. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Seminar method. Minimal lecturing and maximum discussion. Oral presentations.

Recommended preparation

Japanese 472 or the equivalent (good reading knowledge of classical Japanese). Graduate standing. General knowledge of premodern Japanese literature, culture, and history.

Class assignments and grading

Preparation of assigned readings; group discussion; research project (abstract, annotated bibliography, oral presentation, term paper).
